About the gemstone.

Sapphire is a form of corundum, a very hard mineral consisting of aluminum oxide. Corundum rates 9 on the Mohs scale, second in hardness to diamond. The word "corundum" derives from the Sanskrit word for red stone. When corundum is red, it is called ruby; other colors are called sapphire. By convention, if no color is specified when referring to sapphire, then blue is implied. Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September and the zodiac sign Virgo. Sapphire is found in Montana and North Carolina in the US, and in Canada, Thailand, and Australia.
