About the gemstone. Citrine is a variety of quartz, yellow to orange in color. The color is due to traces of iron in the crystalline structure. If amethyst, the purple variety of quartz, is heat-treated, it becomes citrine. Unscrupulous gem dealers will sometimes pass citrine off as yellow topaz. | ||||
| True topaz has a well-developed cleavage, so if you whack it with a hammer and it doesn't cleave neatly into small crystalline shards you likely have citrine. If you don't like to whack your gemstones with a hammer, a better way to distinguish topaz from quartz is by weight. Topaz has a higher specific gravity than quartz, so feels much heftier than citrine. Citrine primarily comes from Brazil. With a hardness of 7 and no cleavage, it is a strong, durable gem for rings. | ||||
